Description

NP train No. 1, the westbound "Mainstreeter," has just crossed the High Bridge at Valley, City, ND, on September 27, 1964. Lead diesel unit is F-9 no. 6702C; 15 cars, including 8 "head end" cars. Engineer Fred J. "Fritz" Lewis; Conductor Benny Empting. The train is running close to schedule this date, under a late afternoon sun. Engineer Lewis is concentrating on making another perfect "spot" (precise stopping point) just ahead, at the Valley City depot "up on the hill" north of town. This is but a flag stop for NP's premier passenger train, the "Vista-Dome North Coast Limited." It is a scheduled stop, however, for trains 1 and 2.
